Competition draws community together to collaborate on response to issues in a post-COVID-19 world
Blockchain software publisher Block.one announced today the winner of the month-long EOSIO “Coding for Change” Virtual Hackathon, which drew diverse applications leveraging blockchain technology aimed at providing new solutions to new challenges as communities begin to stabilize and rebuild from the dramatic changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the many disruptions caused by social distancing and quarantines has been a sharp decline in blood donations, resulting in blood bank shortages across the globe. To address this issue, winning team Lifebank designed an application that has the potential to provide a lifeline to local communities by creating value exchange between eligible donors, donation centers and sponsors. By leveraging EOSIO blockchain technology, the app enables users to create EOS accounts to manage their entire blood donation process, from validating donors to registering local businesses as sponsors in exchange for receiving a life token.
As the winner of the EOSIO Virtual Hackathon, Lifebank is awarded a prize of US$100,000.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the fragility of our critical systems,” said Brendan Blumer, CEO of Block.one. “Many of the projects that we evaluated proposed innovative ways to assist individuals and businesses in recovering from the economic and social ramifications of the pandemic. We selected Lifebank as the winner of the hackathon for their use of blockchain technology to solve a seemingly intractable problem: blood donation shortage in the wake of large-scale disruptions. They are positioned to help secure the healthcare supply chain in the future, and we’re excited to watch their continued success.”
The judges included Ivan Liljeqvist, founder of Ivan on Tech Academy and international speaker about blockchain. “It’s been a pleasure and an honor to judge the EOSIO Hackathon, and I was very impressed by the quality and diversity of the ideas,” said Ivan. “I personally work full-time teaching blockchain programming, and it’s great to see that so many people understood the uniqueness of EOSIO and its possible applications across different sectors and industries.”
The EOSIO Virtual Hackathon kicked off May 1, 2020, concluding with more than 900 participants spanning 92 countries engaging in spirited competition. Solutions included strengthening supply chains for medical resources, bringing equity to education and hiring, and encouraging trust in donations.
